Survivor I

This State Park has wonderful, uncrowded trails, that lead to one great vista after another of the Canyonlands area. I was particularly attracted to the magnificent shadow of this half-dead juniper near "Meander Point". That day, I had my sketchbook and a small camp stool, so I indulged in my favorite thing -- hiking a little, then painting or sketching a little. I had previously tried painting this scene, but was never satisfied with the result. I finally realized the need to paint bigger and in a panoramic format so as to capture the feeling of grandeur of the place.
